Holiday Meal ideas from Walmart

December 23, 2009 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

My mom’s house is just about a block away from Walmart, so I know the store very, very well. Little known fact – my first job was actually as a sales associate in Walmart’s shoe department! Now I live over 1000 miles away, but still feel the same way about Walmart… I can always find exactly what I need at a good price.

In November, Walmart took steps to help Americans share a memorable Thanksgiving with its Thanksgiving Dinner for Eight for as low as $20. Now, with Christmas and New Year’s right around the corner, Walmart has two great encores — Christmas Dinner for Eight for only $30 and a New Year’s Eve party for 10 for under $40. With help like this, moms don’t have to cut corners or sacrifice taste or quality when entertaining this winter.

The current economy impacts overall holiday plans for 80% of us, which makes deals like these that much more important when it comes to ensuring that Americans everywhere have the opportunity to enjoy holiday meals with their families. And with the majority of moms planning to entertain more than 7 people for the holidays, Walmart’s fresh and affordable holiday meals help eliminate some of the stress that comes from hosting a large get-together.

Walmart’s Christmas Dinner for Eight under $30 provides all the ingredients necessary for a traditional meal, including a 10-lb Spiral Cut Half Ham, three cans of Del Monte green beans, one 10-lb bag of russet potatoes, Sara Lee dinner rolls, and a pumpkin pie. The New Year’s party basket for 10 for under $40 includes a Shrimp Tray, Vegetable Tray, Hillshire Farms Little Smokies, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, Land O’Lakes Egg Nog, and a Red Velvet cake. And to give your recipes a new spin, Aarón Sánchez of Food Network fame shares cooking tips and unique, delicious recipes he created with Walmart’s basket of holiday and New Year’s ingredients. You can find these tips and more on Walmart’s Holiday Meals website – www.walmart.com/holidaymeals.

So that you can do a little Walmart shopping in the New Year, I have a couple of gift cards to give away! Two readers will each win a $30 Walmart gift card. To enter, please leave a comment below. I’d love to know what’s on your holiday menu this year!

For extra entries:

  • Subscribe to my feed by feed reader or email (or let me know if you already do).
  • Follow me on Twitter (@OhMariana) and tweet about this giveaway: Giveaway! Win a $30 Walmart gift card from @ohMariana! https://tiny.cc/walmartholiday (One time only.)
  • Grab my button (at the bottom of the page) and link to me in your sidebar or blog roll.

Contest ends: January 7th, 2010 11:59 pm EST. US entries only. One person per household may enter. Leave a separate comment for each entry & a valid email address. Winners, chosen at random, have 3 days to claim their prize.

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Walmart. In addition, I received a Walmart gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate, and two to offer as a giveaway.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a list of all my latest giveaways!

I’m not sure what we’re eating for Christmas this year, because we got invited over to someone else’s at the last minute and they didn’t want us to bring anything.
I was going to make Ham, mashed potatoes, garden salad, a nice fruit salad with cool whip mixed in, and a birthday cake for Jesus.
On New Years, we’ll likely have a great Cheese Enchilada casserole, and lots of different chips and dips and some veggies to dip too.

Punch for the kids!! Lots of Pecan, Apple and Pumpkin Pies and Fudge, lots and lots of fudge. I am beat the guest have left, time to sit back with a nice glass of wine.

I had a frozen apple pie in the freezer that I was hoping to take somewhere for Christmas dinner. It turned out that my part of town lost power on Christmas Eve. Another teacher called and was very concerned about me staying by myself during the power outage. It turned out that I had Christmas dinner of Baked Chicken, dressing, potatoes, gray, and salad with this young man and his mom. I was most appreciative of a wonderful Christmas dinner as none of my brothers and sisters asked me to come to their homes for Christmas dinner.

We always do a bunch of appetizers and finger foods. No sit down meal. It’s so much easier!! And still delicious!

The traditional New Years Day supper includes: Collard greens, black eyed peas, a picnic ham, cranberry sauce, potato salad, deviled eggs, cornbread, sweet tea, and peach cobbler for dessert. Thanks for the chance!

I shop at Wal-Mart for all of my needs. It’s the only shopping center in our small town! I’d love to be a winner.

    Thanks for hosting.

We do pretty traditional foods for our holidays–sweet potato casserole, corn casserole, green bean casserole (see a theme with our casseroles?) and ham

We had turkey and ham for Christmas, and prime rib for new years. I like to do prime rib on Christmas, but we had too many people coming to dinner this year to be able to afford to serve prime rib.
