“You love, love, love baths and are a champion splasher! You even tolerate your big sis pouring pitcherfuls of water over your head without a complaint. The only downfall is the tantrum that ensues when bath time is over.”
That’s an excerpt of a letter I wrote to my baby when she was 9 months old. While she may not be a baby anymore, she still loves her baths! Bath time is a special bonding time between baby and parent where beautiful moments turn into memories that last a lifetime. My sister just found out she’s pregnant, so I’m looking forward to reliving this through her eyes soon!

Bath time really is the perfect opportunity to bond with your little one. There are so many things that parents can do during bath time to engage our baby’s senses and encourage their happy and healthy development. It’s a multi-sensorial playground!
- Sight. Play with bubbles. Hide toys in the bubble bath. This helps babies develop hand-eye coordination and discover that objects exist even when they can’t be seen. Plus it’s a fun way for you to get your child cleaned while they are having fun… at any age!
- Sound. Listening to music, reading a story, or talking back and forth with baby can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for memory and language development. Studies show infants who are spoken with more have larger vocabularies by 24 months of age. Sing your favorite song and before you know it, baby will be singing along with you!
- Smell. Incorporate fragrance into baby’s bath. Smells can evoke powerful emotions, and a clean, fresh, after-bath smell is no exception! Familiar and pleasant scents can make a baby feel happy.
- Touch. Make a massage part of your after-bath routine. Use slow and positive strokes, beginning on the legs. Research shows that infants who experienced routine touch and massage were 50% more likely to make eye contact and 3 times more likely to have an overall positive expression, plus close contact between mom and baby helps calm baby’s breathing, just in time for bed!
The JOHNSON’S® Global Baby Bath Report
For more than 120 years, JOHNSON’S® has been committed to the happy and healthy development of all babies, pioneering the science and setting global standards in baby skin care by providing products that are formulated and designed with baby in mind (JOHNSON’S® baby shampoo with calming lavender is still one of my favorite scents!)
Now, JOHNSON’S® is paving the way by advancing research that reveals the importance of multi-sensorial experiences that can lead to happy, healthy baby development. The JOHNSON’S® Global Baby Bath Report, a global research study conducted in November 2014, reveals that parents around the world spend 10 hours a month on average bathing their children! And, while there are many similarities across the globe, the study shows some unique differences among US Hispanic parents, which I can relate to, being Mexican-American and all…
- Only 45% of parents say bath time is extremely important to their child’s brain development, though Hispanic parents are a bit more in the know (57% say it is extremely important vs. 41% non-Hispanic parents).
- Bath time is a good opportunity to stimulate a child’s senses (touching, smelling, seeing, hearing). Hispanic 53% strongly agree, to 35% non-Hispanic.
- Two in three parents in the US say they hate missing bath time (66%), especially Hispanic parents (79% vs. 63% non-Hispanic parents).
- The sensory effects of bath time stay with them long after bath time is over (77%), especially for Hispanic parents (88% vs. 74% non-Hispanic parents)
- Bath time is a special activity with their child (80%), especially Hispanic parents (90% vs. 78% non-Hispanic parents)
Because the brand believes in enhancing baby care rituals that unlock and release the full power of the senses, and providing parents an opportunity to nurture baby’s ability to learn, think, love and grow, JOHNSON’S® researchers are now working with external experts to further explore and understand the role of sensorial experiences in happy, healthy baby development.
