This post is part of the HEALTHY ESSENTIALS® 2014 program by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. and The Motherhood, who sent me a box of products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are all my own, and I hope you enjoy them.
Summer is such a great season for kids to engage in playtime – the days are long, the weather is beautiful, and we all know that play is SO good for us, both physically and mentally. It challenges us, stimulates us, develops creative thinking, and it’s just plain FUN!
When it comes to the cuts and scrapes that inevitably come with outdoor play, I’m that person that’s always prepared… I have Band-Aids in my purse, a first-aid kit in the car, and a cabinet full of products I trust at home. I think it’s important to have all the products you need to clean, treat and protect your wounds, so you can dust yourself off, clean yourself up, and get back to doing what you love.
But at the moment, the girls and I are halfway through an extended vacation in Texas, visiting my mom, so I didn’t really think to pack many healthy essentials, other than sunscreen. Lots of it.
There’s been a lot of playing and snuggling with mama…
And so much more. We’re on vacation, and my mom’s a nurse… what could possibly happen?
Yesterday, we were out shopping with my sister, and I hadn’t even closed the car door when Maura said, very calmly, “Mom, I think I’m bleeding…” Um… yes! I looked down and blood was gushing from her big toe and all over her pretty white flip flops. Apparently she stepped on a sharp rock after she jumped out of the car but didn’t even feel it until the blood pooled under her foot.
My first thought – raise your foot above your heart to stop the bleeding! That doesn’t work so well in the middle of a parking lot with a 6-year-old in a summer dress, however. So I poured my bottle of water over her foot to wash away the dirt and blood, and carried her into a nearby bookstore. People there probably get paper cuts all the time, right? They must have a first aid kit. Band-Aids, at the very least. And they did. We went to the restroom and got Maura all clean and bandaged up. And I had to keep changing that Band-Aid over and over. Man, do toes bleed a lot! (But of course, she never stands still…)
So I just went to the store and stocked up on some of my favorite healthy essentials for summer:
- Band-Aids… I like the Tough Strips myself – waterproof and durable – but I always get some fun, decorative ones for the girls, too.
- Neosporin To Go… it fits in my purse and has an easy-to-use spray applicator! No touching necessary.
- Neutrogena Suncare… you can never have enough sunscreen.
- Visine… for those red, irritated eyes after hours and hours of swimming.
- And Bengay – for my aches and pains.
What’s great is that right now, you can save BIG on all these items. Yet again, the HEALTHY ESSENTIALS® program is offering amazing printable coupons, tips, tools and so much more for all the products you and your family love.
