Last year, my sister sent me a gerber daisy plant for my birthday. And I thought it was the silliest gift EVER. The problem? I was flying out to see her (and the rest of my family) the very next day, and would be away for half of the summer.
There were three closed blooms, so the plant wasn’t even pretty, I thought to myself. At least the bedazzled white bucket it came in was cute. I knew I couldn’t take it with me – and my husband would surely neglect it while we were gone – but I couldn’t bear to just abandon the plant, so I found myself outside with a flashlight at 10 o’clock at night quickly transferring it into a corner of my garden since we had to leave for the airport early in the morning.
The little girl that I hired to water my garden sent me a beautiful photo of one of the bright orange-red daisies in full bloom soon after, but by the time we returned home 6 weeks later, the plant had died, and I had honestly forgotten about it.
Until last week…
On my birthday – coincidentally! – I decided to take some time to play around in the garden that I’ve barely touched since last summer. Because of the mild winter we had, most of my herbs survived, as did my strawberries… and I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful daisy in there, too!
So now, of course, I feel terrible that I ever scoffed at the gift…

Awwwwww. I Love it! Can’t wait to visit you next month.
You see, plants are better than flowers. I still have the orange forever flowers. I always have it by my desk in my classroom. They remind me of you–ALWAYS!
Love you sis’

Flowers as a gift for a birthday is always a safe idea.
