Dip, Dip, Hooray! A fun family game night

I find that my kids are much more likely to eat their dinner when they have a hand in making it! And if it’s something fun to eat, even better.

Heinz, Tyson & Ore-Ida challenged me to make a creative meal with their products, and that’s exactly what we did. My girls will eat practically anything I put on a stick, so I thought making chicken nugget kabobs would be an easy way for them to get their veggies in. For a fun twist, we broke the house rules and ate in the family room while playing a video game. Family game night, ftw!

We shopped for the ingredients at Walmart.

While I always intend to make a shopping list, I often just fly by the seat of my pants. Of course, this means I end up leaving the store with much more than I expected to! At Walmart, I don’t mind this so much because everything is so affordable.

On my “mental” list, I knew I wanted to get 3 things:

  • Tyson Chicken Nuggets
  • Heinz Ketchup
  • Ore-Ida Golden Crinkle Fries

Unfortunately Walmart was all out of Tyson Chicken Nuggets. I guess they’re popular! So I went with Tyson Popcorn Chicken. I already had skewers, and just looked through my produce drawer for veggies.

Chicken Nugget Kabobs

Ingredients

  • 1 bag Tyson Chicken Nuggets
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 cup of mixed vegetables, steamed until soft, but still crisp
  • Ore-Ida Golden Crinkle Fries
  • Heinz ketchup

Directions

1. Bake the chicken nuggets and and fries according to the package directions.

2. To make it easy, I set the oven to 425º, the timer for 25 minutes, and put the fries in. Then I put the chicken in at the 12-minute mark so it was all ready at the same time.

3. While that’s baking, chop up/cook the veggies and separate into bowls.

4. Start off with a bell pepper piece on each skewer. Because it’s so firm, it’ll keep the rest of the food from sliding off the stick.

5. Alternate veggies and nuggets until you fill each skewer. Repeat this until there are no more chicken nuggets! The girls enjoyed making patterns with theirs… a learning experience without them even realizing it!

6. Serve with Ore-Ida Golden Crinkle Fries and a side of Heinz ketchup for dipping.

The girls played Hasbro Family Game Night 4 on the Xbox while the chicken nuggets and fries were baking, took a short break to help with the skewers, but went right back to the game! Since there are several games in one – Yahtzee, Connect Four, Sorry!, Scrabble, etc. – it’s a fun video game for the entire family to play.

Maya and Maura loved that the kabobs were so easy to eat. No plate necessary! The fries came out perfectly golden and crisp. The only thing we had to go back to the kitchen for was more ketchup!

That’s a great idea making skewers with the chicken! I agree that my kids eat better when they get to help.
