Dyeing hair with Kool-Aid

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

Sipping on Kool-AidAs part of a sponsored post for Collective Bias®  I created a Kool Creation by dyeing my daughter’s hair with Kool-Aid drink mix.

When I was in high school my friends and I would dye our hair with Kool-Aid before football games. Purple, usually, as that was one of our school colors.

Fast-forward 15 years, and I find myself teaching my daughter the same trick! A fun hair dye that is easy, affordable and not permanent?

AWESOME!

How to dye your hair with Kool-Aid

We started off by visiting Walmart to buy Kool-Aid…

Walking to Walmart

Maya already knew that she wanted red, so we grabbed a few packets of Cherry Kool-Aid.
Maura wanted to try purple, so she opted for Grape.

Kool-Aid

We also added a few other Kool-Aid product to our shopping cart…

Kool-Aid products

You can dye your hair with Kool-Aid in just a few simple steps!

1) Choose the color (flavor) you’d like.

Kool-Aid

2) Untangle your hair.

Untangling hair

3) Find a bowl that you don’t mind staining and pour the contents of
2 Kool-Aid packets into it. I used 3 for Maya’s dark hair.

Kool-Aid

4) Add 2 cups of boiling water and stir until the powder dissolves.

Kool-Aid
5) Dip hair into the Kool-Aid for at least 10 minutes.
Maya could barely stand the heat from the steam!

6) Dry hair with a towel (an old one, since it may also be stained).

I’d recommend wearing rubber gloves or your hands will be dyed, too!

7) Brush out hair and let it air dry or blow dry it if you’re impatient.

Brushing hair
Ta-dah!

Pretty red hair!

Maya’s hair is fairly dark, so I honestly wasn’t sure how this would turn out, but she’s thrilled with the results! As for how long it lasts, she’s washed her hair a couple of times and the color is still bright. I remember my color would last at least a couple of weeks, fading out slowly, but my hair is significantly lighter and not as thick as hers, so results may vary.

Pretty red hair!

Maya enjoyed a Kool-Aid Jammer as a reward for all her hard work! 😀

Sipping on Kool-Aid

This project was fun!
Have you ever dyed your (or your kid’s) hair with Kool-Aid? How did it turn out?

Just so you know, my 13 year old dip dyed her hair with Kool-Aid last year and it’s still in to this very day. It’s very cool – but if you expect it to wash out… it might not. Just an fyi.

My sisters and I used to dye our hair with Kool-aid often. We taught our nieces how to do it. Partly because we were never allowed to alter our hair in any way with “real” hair chemicals or to cut it, and partly because it was just so much fun. I taught my daughter how, and she showed her friends. It’s pretty safe and costs less than $1.00

Hey Tara! I don’t think this would work with Kool-Aid Jammers, plus it would be a sticky mess with all that sugar! But I guess it doesn’t hurt to try it? The liquid has to be hot for the color to absorb into your hair. Good luck!

for dark hair not only do you need more packets but you can also make it a paste and apply it that way too nd will be easier than dipping into a cup aso good for short hair and will come out betteerr than just liquid

    Dear Mariana

Do you know what color would look best in kind of dark brown hair. My hair color is aboutt the same, but maybe a little lighter thatn your daughters. THe red looks cool, but I heard that it can be more permenant and stay longer.

I cannot wait to ask my mom if I can try this!

Before you dye your hair, protect the sides of your face from being stained by applying some petroleum jelly or Vaseline on the desired areas.
