Wednesday or Thursday morning (don’t remember exactly which day because they just kind of blend in together) I was sitting in the dining room my office looking at something online while Maya sat across from me, doing some worksheets. She looked at the roses in the vase in the center of the table and said “Mommy, those flowers look so sad. They’re thirsty!” My father-in-law had given us those roses along with some balloons on Valentine’s Day, but I had honestly forgotten about them. So much so that the water in the vase had completely dried up.
Maya must have noticed the rueful expression on my face and said “It’s okay. We can get new flowers… but where do they sell them?”
This led to a never-ending conversation about where flowers come from, what a florist does, and whatnot. You know, the kind of chat where every answer is followed by another ‘but why?’ In the middle of this, I saw my FedEx guy drop off a package and run back into his truck, but didn’t feel like getting up to see what it was. I get a package or two almost everyday, so I thought nothing of it.
Later that day I remembered that the box was still sitting at my doorstep, and was surprised to see ‘ProFlowers’ printed on it when I opened the door. I knew for a fact that flowers weren’t on my list of product reviews and it was even less likely that they were from my husband. He doesn’t buy me flowers that often, and rarely “just because”. Not that I’m complaining!
Maya was indescribably excited, squealing with delight when I removed the flowers from the packaging. “You seeee, mommy! I TOLD you we were going to get more flowers! How did the delivery guy know we needed some new ones?” It was quite a coincidence!
I was more consumed with figuring out who they were from than the actual flowers themselves. I quickly read the note, saw they were from my sis, and my first thought was – I wish she had just sent me the money! I was surprised at my own reaction, because I love flowers. I guess I’ve just gotten to the point where I don’t see the beauty of an item, I just see its price tag. Cynical much? In this case, the cost of the flowers could’ve bought us dinner at a restaurant, if not a few meals’ worth of groceries.
This is when I realized I’m turning into my mom! It was bound to happen eventually, right?! I remember when I was younger she was never really that impressed when she was given flowers. I guess now I understand why.
When I called my sister to thank her for the roses, I told her how I felt. She sent them to cheer me up, which they did, but I have a feeling she won’t be sending me flowers again anytime soon!
How do you feel about giving/receiving flowers? Is it a waste of money?

What a sweet bunch of flowers 🙂
Flowers deserve every penny we pay in them because they have their own language 🙂

I just got some “Get Well Soon” flowers yesterday and they completely made my day. They’re bright and beautiful. Not a waste of money at ALL.
Yours are quite nice, too!

Your right, I wasn’t really expexting that reaction from you. But it didn’t get to me!! I’m still going to buy you flowers whenever I feel like it :- p
Yes, the flowers were somewhat pricy, but like the comments say above. NEVER put a price on flowers! I wouldnt mind recieveing flowers from time to time, even when I’m low on cash & felt that the person who gave me those flowers should of given me the $ instead. Why do that though? I know money doesnt grow on trees, but you only live once, why not live it by recieving beautiful flowers and knowing who are the people that actually care about them and remember them! Flowers are meant to sooth, cheer, pay respects, ect.
So appreciate those flowers because they are part of natures beauty! 😀
LOVE YOU BUNCHES!!!!!!!
mothers day is coming around hahaha….hint hint.
—Yes u are turning out somewhat like mom (kinda funny actually).

YOu know what i realized though,
I’ve never recieved flowers from mom. Not on my graduation, birthday, quiencenera, ect. All my friends that I’ve talked to and Tias from mexico too, buy their daughters flowers on their graduation or special birthdays. It wouldnt hurt for mom to buy me flowers for once in her life time. I dont care if its one rose.
🙁
Sad isnt it? But I understand shes not very (tierna)

I just want to say,I hear where your coming from! I’m a nurse in a nursing facility, and when I first started I used to think how sad and dreary it was to get flowers,or predictable! Notice please I wrote USE TO! I have watched the magic of recieving flowers happen on my patients,AND their family members in some terminal cases.I’ve experienced it my self on several occasions, when out of no where totally unexpected flowers arrived for me! I do try to bring my kids flowers in the warmer months, from the organic farm I do my CSA on.I let them come pick their own on pick up day! Flowers as my aunt use to say look best in the fields, but we’re not all privy to those fields are we? But we do desrve to have that tiny connection to life given by the love of mother nature,to share in the warmth of her magic energy that is shared and doubled when given to our loved ones out of love.Aaaahhhh! Yes that is the magic of flowers and they are totally priceless, thank you to your sister from another human being for giving you and your family some love & flower magic just when you needed it! Yes,I send out flowers when I can too! : )

I am on the fence here. I do feel flowers cost far too much and therefore can’t bring myself to buy them, and I DO immediately think about the money on the extremely rare occasion I am given them but…
I also pout and feel sorry for myself when everyone around me seems to get them but I don’t! lol
Its a lose lose! hehe
Oh well.In the end, I do Love flowers and every decade or so when someone decides I am worth them, I relish every petal.
Gratefully,
Christy 🙂
