My youngest daughter, Maura, starts Kindergarten in 11 days (yes, we’re keeping count)… and I think I may be more nervous than she is! This week we’ve been having fun preparing for school with LeapFrog’s Tag Get Ready for Kindergarten book. Geared towards kids 4 to 6 years old, this is a great addition to our growing Tag library.

The Get Ready for Kindergarten book covers several subjects including math, science, reading, and social studies, and more with colorful illustrations and fun sound effects. The cool thing about Tag is that it brings books to life with just a touch! All Maura has to do is press the ON button on the Tag Reader (sold separately) and tap anywhere in the book to get started.

Have you ever wondered how the Tag Reader works, by the way? I just found out that it has a small, sophisticated infrared camera that “reads” letters, words and pictures printed on special dot-patterned surfaces of all the Tag products. Are you getting out your magnifying glass? That’s what Maya, my 8-year-old, did when I tried to explain this to her!

Now back to the book. There are tons of activities to choose from in the pages of Tag Get Ready for Kindergarten! Maura is more interested in math than reading these days, so it didn’t surprise me to see her gravitate toward pattern activities and “Monster Math,” where she helped monsters count their candy. The book also covers essential literacy skills like matching letters with the sounds they make and identify short vowel sounds in words. Still working on all this with Maura, so I’m glad I have this book to make it a little more fun.

As for other subjects – science and social studies – these are probably the ones that Maura had the most fun with, maybe because they’re the ones that she associates the least with school. She has her own calendar, so she thought it was cool to have one in the book that “talks” and I found that she’s already learning the months of the year. It’s all about repetition, and Tag gives kids plenty of that!

Identifying dinosaurs was probably the most challenging activity for her, but she loved it and plays that game over and over. My personal favorite, because we’ve been talking about using your words and expressing feelings so much lately, is the last page – Feelings Funhouse. Tag asks you to listen to music and touch how it makes you feel – scared, angry, happy, etc. How fabulous is that? There is no right or wrong answer!

We’ve been having a great time Tag Get Ready for Kindergarten together. It’s also been great for Maura to work on by herself. I love seeing her respond out loud to Tag’s questions… Tag can get more out of her than I can!
