On Saturday, May 30th, The Capital Wheel is celebrating its first birthday! Over the past year, the Capital Wheel has been featured on SNL, ESPN and has changed the DC skyline as it stands 180 feet above the Potomac waterfront.
I’ve ridden the Capital Wheel with my family, and it’s wonderful! Sitting in one of the 42 air-conditioned gondolas, you can relax and take in the DC skyline, even if you’re a little nervous about heights, like I tend to be. The ride is about 15 minutes long, which is just right. My kids really enjoy this attraction, and we’ve since gone back with family and friends!
At night, 1.6 million LED lights change color in coordination with music.
It’s really beautiful!
The Capital Wheel, a long with the carousel nearby, make for a fun family outing! I bet it would be a perfect date night activity as well. There are lots of fun places to eat and shop at the National Harbor!
Capital Wheel Birthday Party
To celebrate the Capital Wheel’s birthday, this Saturday there is a special day planned full of fun activities, including a DJ on the plaza from 10am –10pm, Buzz Bakery cupcakes for the first 500 riders, fun props in the Wheel’s gondolas for photo ops, and Golden Ticket giveaways all day!
WIN IT!
The Capital Wheel is giving away 10 packs of 3 “Golden Tickets” to my community. While these aren’t actually ride tickets (more like fun scratch off-style tickets), the cool thing is that every one is a winner! Ticket prizes include:

Do all three for a better chance at winning! I’ll pick the winners early next week so the tickets can be mailed out to you ASAP. How awesome would it be to win free rides for the entire year? My kids would go NUTS!

I’m not sure my fear of heights would ever allow me IN the wheel, but I’m super jealous you get to live near just an amazing city!

This is going to be a must-stop when we visit D.C.! What an amazing vantage point…and I love that they are air conditioned gondolas! We are planning on a family trip for next spring!
We have been to DC twice this year and don’t recall seeing this. Guess I better look better next time.
Oh my, I can’t believe how pretty those lights are at night. Celebrating or just spending a day there would be awesome!
I agree! I think the best time to take a ride on it would be a night so you could enjoy the light show too! What a beautiful addition to the landscape!
I didn’t even know that is what this was called! We are headed there next year – I hope they offer another discount!

I am so glad I stumbled upon your post! The hubby and I have been talking about taking a long weekend off work this summer and visiting DC. Neither of us have ever been, but we just live in northern PA so it’s not terribly far from us. Anyhow, I didn’t even know about the Capital Wheel! We’ll definitely have to check that out when we get there 🙂
This looks like a MUST DO for a trip to DC. Congrats to the Capital Wheel!
