Did you watch the Oscars? Here are some of the highlights from last night’s awards show, for me, anyway! It’s a long, photo-rich post, so be sure to scroll down to the bottom to see my picks for Best, Worst, and Meh-dressed. 😉
SPEECHES
- Michel Hazanavicius’ speech, after The Artist won Best Picture.
“I want to say to my wife, Bérénice Bejo, who’s here that I love you, but it’s not just that, it’s about the movie. You inspired the movie and you’re the soul of the movie and the positive feeling of the movie. Thank you for being this in the movie and in my life.”
- Bret McKenzie’s speech, after he won Best Original Song for “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets:
“I grew up in New Zealand watching “The Muppets” on TV. I never dreamed I’d get to work with them. And I was genuinely starstruck when I finally met Kermit the Frog. But once you get to know him, he’s just a normal frog. And like many stars here tonight, he’s a lot shorter in real life.”
- Ludovic Bource, after he won Best Original Score for The Artist:
“… To all of you, please accept me because I’ve got so much love to give.”
- Octavia Spencer, after winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help was asked backstage how she would sum up this award season:
“Well, the word I want to use I can’t, it’s a word in the… well, I want to say fan effing tastic. But we’ll just leave the effing out. Fantastic. It is humbling. It is the love affair I’ve had with The Help, I’m a benefactor of all of the riches that the real life Minnys, Aibileens, Constantines, Skeeters, Celias, that they basically repeated. And so I’m very humbled because I get to stand here and accept this award and I haven’t really done anything… I just think that you have to believe in yourself and you have to work very hard. You can’t ever think that you’re the best thing since sliced bread because I promise you, there are going to be Viola Davises and Jessica Chastains and Emma Stones who are the best thing since sliced bread. So take it seriously, but don’t take it too seriously.”
- Gore Verbinski, backstage after winning Best Animated Feature Film for Rango:
“I feel like I’m dreaming right now… I mean, it’s here. It’s in my hand. It’s very heavy. It feels good.”
- Christopher Plummer, after winning Best Supporting Actor for Beginners:
“You’re only two years older than me darling, where have you been all my life?
- Meryl Streep, after winning Best lead Actress for The Iron Lady:
“First I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives you’ve given me.”
While I didn’t like Meryl’s gown, her shoes were fierce. Ferragamos, which happen to be the brand of shoes favored by Margaret Thatcher. Did she wear them for good luck? Perhaps!
FUNNY PARTS
My favorite was when The Descendants won Best Adapted Screenplay, and Jim Rash mocked Angelina Jolie’s pose. It was hilarious. The other two writers, Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon, were looking on, wondering what he was doing!
Backstage Jim explained: “I just saw her pose and I thought, you know what, we have exactly the same legs and I wanted to show everyone what it meant. It was a loving tribute. It was more like, oh, she’s standing, great, I’m going to stand like that, too.” I’m hoping Angelina didn’t take it too seriously. She was smiling when she went back on stage, but didn’t stand that way again. 😉
I was happy to have Billy Crystal back as host of the show. He played it a little safe, though, but was funny and entertaining overall. Love when he sung to Martin Scorsese!
I realized just how much I miss Chris Rock… he’s so funny!
Sacha Baron Cohen dumping “ashes” on Ryan Seacrest… while this was funny and completely unexpected, it was uncalled for. Ryan was a good sport, though.
LOVELY LADIES
Penelope Cruz wore one of my favorite gowns of the night – a beautiful blue-grey Armani Privé gown.
Octavia Spencer has worn Tadashi Shoji at all the awards shows this season. This is the best one yet! The way the design goes to the middle really accentuates her waist.
Although Oprah didn’t appear for more than a few seconds in the Oscars telecast, I saw that she looked beautiful in a gold gown! It was by Theia. What I love is that she recycled it, as she had previously worn it on the cover of her magazine last year.
Angelina Jolie wore a stunning black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a slit up to there.
Cameron Diaz, in Gucci, looked flawless! Love her hair style.
Ellie Kemper wore a glittery Armani Privé gown that matched her hair. Her bangs bugged me, though.
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a simple, white Tom Ford gown that looked perfect on her.
Jennifer Lopez, beautiful, as always! In Zuhair Murad.
Michelle Williams looked so pretty in her coral-colored Louis Vuitton gown.
Viola Davis looked amazing in green Vera Wang. Love that she went natural with her hair!
Milla Jovovich, a presenter, was looking gorgeous in vintage Elie Saab. Her first time at the Oscars!
Glenn Close, in a gown by Zac Posen. Age appropriate and figure flattering. She should help Meryl out. 😉
Natalie Portman wore a vintage haute couture Christian Dior gown with polka dots! I loved it. So fun.
MEH
- While I loved Shailene Woodley’s Valentino couture gown – it’s gorgeous! – it’s just way to old for her! I could see Helen Mirren wearing it.
- Emma Stone’s Giambattista Valli gown is pretty, but it looks a little too much like one Nicole Kidman wore a few years back.
- Kristen Wiig, in J. Mendel, looked pretty. I wish she would have kicked it up a notch, though.
- Judy Greer, in Monique Lhuillier, didn’t look happy to be there.
- Not surprising to see Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera, but I found it boring. A beautiful necklace or more eye-catching earrings would have helped.
- Jessica Chastain wore a very regal looking Alexander McQueen. The jury’s still out on this one.
- Rose Byrne wore a glittery black Vivienne Westwood gown that, while pretty, seemed a little too stark for her delicate features.
- Meryl Streep, in Lanvin. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it, either. The fabric seems too heavy.
- Virginia Madsen wore what looks a lot like my senior prom dress… down to the color.
- Penelope Ann Miller wore one of my favorite designers, Badgley Mishka, but the color just drowned her out.
- Rooney Mara, in Givenchy. I’m happy she didn’t wear black, but this just does nothing for me. I do love the back, though!
UGH
- Melissa Leo, in Reem Acra. Just… no.
- Melissa McCarthy wore a dusty pink Marina Rinaldi gown that totally emphasized the wrong area. While the color’s not bad, I don’t like the fabric at all. She should wear something with a little more structure.
- Blah. Maya Rudolph wore a Johanna Johnson gown that I just don’t have much to say about.
- Sandra Bullock’s Marchesa gown didn’t fit her well.
- Lea Thompson did not look comfortable at all in her gown, and could have used a good fitting. Interestingly, she made the shawl herself. (What was she even doing at the Oscars?)
