Better family nutrition with Jamie Oliver and Disney Family.com

April 25, 2010 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

Because Disney Family.com recognizes the importance of eating and living healthy, they wanted to provide tips and advice on slashing sugar, cooking light, healthy recipes and more. That’s why the site has partnered with Jamie Oliver – America’s new healthy food champion – and has recently added brand new site content focused on living better and living well. Jamie Oliver’s show, ‘Food Revolution,’ addresses how families can rediscover ways to cook simple, delicious and affordable meals, and Family.com now features recipes from Jamie as well as his personal tips for healthy living. In addition, if you missed it on TV, you can also stream episodes of Food Revolution from the site.

To spread the word about Family.com’s partnership with Jamie Oliver, and the corresponding site content, I’m offering a gift pack to one winner which includes Jamie Oliver’s book, Jamie’s Food Revolution, Family.com branded oven mitts and apron, and a cutting board and bowl set. It’s a prize valued at approximately $85!

To enter, please leave a comment telling me how you encourage your family to make healthy decisions when it comes to food, or let me know about a recent, positive lifestyle change you’ve made. Year round, you can visit Disney Family.com for parenting advice, travel ideas, recipes and more.

For extra entries:

  • Subscribe to my feed by feed reader or email (or let me know if you already do).
  • Follow me on Twitter (@OhMariana) and tweet about this giveaway (one time): I just entered to win Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution book… & more! Details here: https://tinyurl.com/2bwk2k9 #RWHN (pls RT?)
  • Link to me in your sidebar or blog roll. Feel free to grab my button (at the bottom of the page).

Contest ends May 7th, 2010 11:59 pm EST. US entries only, one person per household. Leave a separate comment per entry & a valid email address. Winner, chosen at random, has 3 days to claim their prize.

Every week I buy a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. I keep a bowl of cut up fruit ready to eat and I make a big bowl of stir fried vegetables. I also keep containers of cooked Spinach and Peas cooked and ready to add to recipes.

Love Jaimie Oliver and the work he’s doing to get America’s kids back ona healthy track! Now that my kids are grown, I encourage good habits w/my Grandson by insisting on REAL juices (Not those juice-like things in the squeeze packs and some juice boxes!) and lots of veggies. Luckily both his Mom & Dad love good fresh food and his Mom ate well while prenant/Nursing. Small changes can make a BIG difference – cut out all the excess sugar/high fructose corn syrup etc and kids become ALOT less agitated and “hyper”. It may take a week or so, but the change will be amazing!

The girls absolutely love that I make so many things homemade now. They’re constantly asking me “well, do you think you could make that homemade? Yours would be better,” and often times it’s things they know are unhealthy otherwise. They’re giddy when I admit that I’ve put pureed pumpkin into a cake or brownies, etc, and they couldn’t even tell….but by skipping the oil, it’s so much better for us, even though it’s still a treat to be eaten in moderation.

I’m trying to help my mom when it comes to healthier food choices with my preteen brother. I help supply healthier versions of his favorites and we give healthier choices along with what he requests. For example, I made whole wheat banana cookies that he loved. Or when he asks for toast on plain white bread, we’ll give him a slice of whole wheat and the white bread so that he will at least try the whole wheat (he liked it last time, too!).

My son is great about eating fruit, but not vegetables so much, so I try to hide them in his meals! Meatballs are a favorite in our house because I can puree veggies into them without him even realizing it!

I make sure that for some snacktimes, the kids have a choice of 2 healthy snacks, that’s it. They haven’t figured this out yet.

I’ve been making an effort to buy healthier, whole grain breads and pastas, and serve fruit juice instead of pop when water won’t do.

Does sneaking healthy stuff in count as encouraging? 😉 My husband is easy when it comes to eating healthy stuff. It’s my two year old who is super tricky. Sneaking the good stuff in is about the only way.
