Movie of the Week: Midnight in Paris

One of my favorite movies this summer was “Midnight in Paris“. I saw it back in June – with my sister in Austin – and again in late July, back home with my husband. I can’t believe I haven’t already written about it here. I think I got so excited about “The Help” (my 2nd favorite movie!) that it slipped my mind.

A romantic comedy about a family on a business trip in the City of Light, “Midnight in Paris” has this lovely whimsical feel to it. The dialogue is great, the music, fantastic, and the backdrop, amazing.

Imagine having a conversation with Hemingway, Picasso, Dalí… Owen Wilson’s character, Gil, does just that in this film.

Owen’s definitely the star of the movie, deservedly so, but Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard also have major roles. I’ve loved Marion ever since I saw her in “La Vie en Rose” and she does not disappoint in this film either. There are a handful of other big names with very interesting cameos, but I won’t ruin the surprise!

I’ve easily watched more than half of Woody Allen’s movies, and this one may just be at the top of my most-loved list, along with “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Husbands & Wives,” “Match Point,” and “Annie Hall.” Judging from box office numbers, I believe this his most financially successful movie to date. It was even re-released late last month, so you can probably still find it in theaters! Rated PG-13, it’s a movie you can feel comfortable taking your teenage daughters to. They’d love it!

I’ve always wanted to go to Paris, and this film makes me yearn for it even more. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again. Watch the trailer and tell me what you think! If you’ve seen the movie, I’d love to hear your thoughts, too.
