When it comes to Day of the Dead and Mexican culture, Disney-Pixar’s Coco gets it right. From the colorful characters and beautiful music, to the Spanish words and Mexican sayings sprinkled in throughout, this film showcases the Mexican people and their traditions without the typical stereotypes. Being Mexican-American myself, I’m so happy to finally see a celebration of Mexican culture portrayed so lovingly on the big screen. My daughters and I enjoyed this movie so much!
Coco tells the story of Miguel, a 12-year-old Mexican boy who wants to follow his dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family’s inexplicable generations-old ban on music. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful “Land of the Dead,” where he encounters the souls of his deceased relatives and other lively characters who encourage him to follow his dreams and help him unlock the real story behind his family’s history.
From the same director and producer as Toy Story 3, Coco has that familiar sentimental feel and stunning animation that we have come to expect from Pixar movies. It focuses on the importance of family, past and present, which is something we can all relate to. The characters all have big personalities, just like my familia. We laughed at Miguel’s Abuelita – “That’s SO grandma!” my daughters both giggled. Warm and loving, yet no-nonsense!
My family and friends in Mexico were able to see Coco weeks ago, where it has broken box office records since premiering there just before Día de los Muertos in October. The number one film of all time there, in fact. Everyone raved about it, so I was so excited to finally see it… and it surpassed my expectations! Maya and I both left the theater in tears, as I’m sure many who have lost beloved relatives also will. I just wish my abuelita was here to see it with us. She would have loved it!
Rated PG, Disney•Pixar’s Coco opens nationwide on Wednesday, November 22. While it’s not scary, the film is just under two hours long and has quite a bit of dialogue, so I would recommend it for kids 6 years old and up. An all-new short, “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” opens in front of Coco, so be sure to get to the theater on time!
