A few months ago, my husband came home with an old sewing machine. I’ve always wanted one, but I just could never justify the expense since I don’t even know how to sew! So he comes home with this dusty sewing machine… and of course, my curiosity was piqued – did someone give it to him? Did he buy it at a thrift shop? Did it fall off the back of a truck? I didn’t ask any questions.
Months go by, and I still haven’t even cracked open the case to the sewing machine. It’s sitting on the floor where I left it the day he brought it home. The problem isn’t me – it’s that I don’t know where to put it. I don’t have a craft room – the dining room table is our craft area. Until now.
Is the Sauder name familiar to you?
I remember my first computer desk in high school was a Sauder. A corner desk in a white finish. That desk was solid. I remember it clearly because it was my first computer. The first time I connected to the Internet. It was a big deal. That desk stuck around for many years after I moved out.
I honestly thought that Sauder only manufactured office furniture, but I was wrong! They make so much more – bedroom furniture, dining room tables, even shelving for bathrooms. There’s something for every space in your home. Sauder invited me to choose an item from their website so that I could share the entire Sauder Experience with you!
ORDERING
Ordering is so easy! Simply visit Sauder.com, find your piece, and place your order. The hard part is choosing what to buy! If you’re indecisive like me, you can find some great style inspiration through the website’s style quiz and Expedition Design section.
I actually ended up browsing the website by space, and then filtered the results by price (I had $250 to spend) and by color (I wanted something dark). This narrowed things down quite a bit, making it much easier for me to make my decision. The sewing/craft cart in a beautiful Cinnamon Cherry finish stood out to me under the ‘Utility+Garage Storage’ category. An answer to my sewing machine quandary! And I could already imagine even more possibilities for this piece.
Before ordering, I used the measurements on the product page to block out an area in my family room to make sure the cart would fit. Perfectly. I still had a little bit left in my budget, so I bought a couple more things, but I’ll leave that for a second post.
ASSEMBLY
Sauder said to expect my furniture with one week after ordering, but it arrived so fast – within a couple of days. The table weighed 85 pounds, but I was still able to drag it all the way to the family room. Knowing all too well how items are often mistreated during shipping, I appreciated that the box was very well packaged… every side was guarded with cardboard edge protectors and the entire thing was wrapped in a thick plastic.
I was planning to assemble the cart by myself, but my husband saw me sorting out the many screws, and decided to give me a hand.
It took us an hour and 15 minutes to put it together from start to finish. I basically read the instructions and told him what to do. The instructions were very clear and each part was labeled with a corresponding letter. Easy peasy.
I didn’t need to use Sauder’s award-winning, Ohio-based customer service at any point during the process, but knowing that I could contact them by phone, email, or live chat for any issues is reassuring. Sauder even has a YouTube channel where there are tons of assembly videos.
You definitely have a feeling of accomplishment after putting something like this together. Dare I say it – it was even kind of fun!
USE
Now it was time to make the cart my own. I knew exactly where I wanted to place the craft table and rolled it over to the spot. It’s in our family room, where I spend most of my time.
Before the space used to look like this…
And know it’s so much better!
I can pull up a stool that the girls use at the computer, and sit there, with direct view of the TV. Because it’s dedicated to the sewing machine and other crafts, I won’t have to put the machine away after each use and may actually accomplish something. I also love that I can put the machine away inside, close all the doors, and it looks just like another beautiful piece of furniture.
Throughout this experience, I’ve learned that Sauder manufactures much more than office furniture – the company makes affordable pieces that fit my style.
