Nutella hazelnut spread [recipe idea!]

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted a party. A Nutella party. ‘Nuf said, right?. Nutella hazelnut spread makes everything better… and a party that revolves around it? Well, that’s just heaven. MommyParties sent me a ton of Nutella goodies to share with my local mom friends, and we shared recipe ideas and snacked on some good food while we watched the kids play.

NutellaIn case you’ve never tried it (gasp!), Nutella is a hazelnut spread made with roasted hazelnuts, skim milk, and a little cocoa. It’s been a favorite of Europeans for decades, and when used in moderation with complementary foods, Nutella is a quick and easy tool to encourage kids to eat whole grains, such as whole wheat toast, English muffins, toaster waffles and bagels. Breakfast, in particular, should not be a hassle! Spread a little Nutella on toast, serve with some fresh fruit and a glass of milk, and tadah! A healthy breakfast is served (that your kids will LOVE!) Nutella also happens to be a wonderful option for those with peanut allergies. The spread does not contain peanuts or peanut ingredients, nor does the product come in contact with peanuts during manufacturing.

While Nutella on toast is yummy, I like to kick breakfast up a notch. The highlight of the party was definitely my strawberry and Nutella crepes. Did you know that making crepes is super easy? You probably already have all the ingredients on hand already.
Nutella crepes!
Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • pinch of salt
  • a couple of spoonfuls of melted butter
  • strawberries, bananas, or your favorite fruit
  • and Nutella, of course!

Directions:

    1. Throw the eggs, milk, flour, butter and salt in the blender. I find it’s less chunky this way. Let the batter sit in the fridge for a while; at least 20 minutes.
    2. Spray a big non-stick pan with cooking spray and place over medium heat.
    3. Pour a small amount of batter into the pan and quickly swirl it around, as it’ll start cooking immediately. I use a small ladle.

.

  1. yumKeep an eye on the crepe. When the top looks kind of shiny, flip it over with a big spatula. The crepes may look thin and delicate, but you’d be surprised how well they hold up to flipping. When it’s golden brown on both sides, slide it out of the pan. My first one always looks awful, but after that, I’m a crepe-making machine!
  2. You can keep the crepes warm in the oven, or start preparing them as you wait for the others to cook. Spread each crepe with a thin layer of Nutella, a spoonful or two, depending on its size. I place the jar of Nutella in a bowl of warm water for a little bit, to soften it up and make it easy to spread.
  3. Top with fruit, if you’d like, and then fold or roll the crepes. My kids like them rolled up. 🙂 You could also add a dollop of whipped cream, but I’m trying to eat healthy here, PEOPLE!

Nutella crepes!

Servings: It’s hard to say, since it depends on how big you want to make them. This will make 6-8 medium-sized crepes.

Variations: You could add a little flavor to the batter, like a splash of vanilla or a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa, or a spoonful or two of sugar, if you like them on the sweet side.

If Nutella crepes sound too complicated, a simple Nutella and strawberry sandwich really hits the spot!

You cannot possibly go wrong with a recipe that involves nutella. One of my favourite things in the whole world is just simply bread and butter with Nutella and bananas on it. When I used to cycle a lot this was what kept me going.

Luscious bread generously filled with Nutella, a creamy hazelnut spread.

I love, love, LOVE Nutella, and have been looking for more reasons to cook with Mascarpone.
