It’s been a month now since our new playset was installed, but it feels like we’ve had it forever. Playing outside has become routine. We’re usually out there in our PJs, right after breakfast. Me, with my cup of coffee and New York Times, and my daughters, with nothing more than sleepy eyes and bountiful energy. They can be out there for hours!
I’ve always believed that kids need their own space. Somewhere where they can escape, where mommy won’t go and tell them to clean their room. For my daughters, this is that place. It’s become a refuge for Maya, Maura, and all their friends.
Just because it’s theirs doesn’t mean that they can be careless, however. The playset is part of our home now, so we must treat it as such. Maintaining it is mostly mine and my husband’s responsibility, but I also make sure the girls understand that they play a role. Whether it be wiping off the dusting of pollen on the slide, or storing their toys in the little storage area, they know they must help out in some way.
Speaking of maintenance, I’ve wanted to seal the playset, but the rain doesn’t let up long enough for me to do so. You know… April showers! Sigh… BUT I read somewhere that it may be better to wait a little while and let the playset weather slightly before treating it, because cedar has a natural resin that can inhibit the penetration of a sealer. So maybe the rain isn’t so bad!
I just saw that Backyard Discovery has partnered with Woman’s World Magazine to give away the very same playset we own – The Highlander. You can enter by visiting swingsetsonline.com/sweepstakes.aspx starting this Saturday, May 1st, 2010. Bookmark the site so you don’t forget!

This is really neat. My bro and sis in law just bought one, too. Very similar to this one. I love the wood, totally awesome.
It’s like having your own park. How cool is THAT?
