This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Latina Bloggers Connect and The Allstate Foundation.
Domestic violence. Even though it’s incredibly common, an issue that impacts millions, it’s something we just don’t talk about!
Did you know:
- Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime? That’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined.
- It happens more than 145 times each hour in the U.S.? On average, three women die every day as a result.
- More than one-third of Americans have never discussed the issue with family or friends?
- Only about half of Americans say they would know how to help a victim of domestic violence?
- The number one indicator of whether a domestic violence victim will stay, leave or return to an abusive relationship is lacking financial knowledge and resources?
- Women who are victims of domestic violence are usually subject to financial abuse as well? They often face financial restrictions and are given limited access, if any, to bank accounts, important documents, and information about shared assets.
It’s time to break the silence! As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Allstate Foundation created the Purple Purse campaign to urge people to openly talk about the issue. The Purple Purse – the foundation’s symbol for domestic violence – proudly represents a woman’s way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining financial independence because a purse is the center of a woman’s financial domain and purple is the national color of domestic violence awareness. By placing the power directly into people’s hands with a purse, Purple Purse provides a conversation starter. Now in its third year, the campaign has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA – $5 for for every purple purse passed through the end of October – for programs designed at assisting survivors of domestic violence and other women in need.
1,300 purple purses filled with domestic violence information and facts have been distributed throughout the U.S. – and I have one of them, along with a virtual purse that I hope will be passed across the country by you, my readers, sparking important conversations about domestic violence and empowering those impacted by it to start talking about the issue.
This is where YOU come in. Want to make a BIG difference? Help me “Pass the Purse!” Every time someone clicks on the purse link – www.purplepurse.com or www.bolsomorado.com – and passes the purse by entering the code on the card, a $5 donation will be triggered from Allstate Foundation to the YWCA for programs that support victims of domestic violence and build financial empowerment.
So visit www.purplepurse.com and enter the virtual purse code and your zip code into the map. You’ll be able to follow the purple purses on their journey around the country, track the YWCA’s progress toward their goal of earning $350,000 from The Allstate Foundation, and get tips to help you start talking about domestic violence.
Visit Facebook.com/PurplePurse or PurplePurse.com for more information. Remember to pass it on – the more people you pass the Purple Purse to, the more money is raised. Let’s stop the cycle of abuse!

What a great idea for a great cause! So many people are unaware of how common it is that they don’t really think about it. This is a great idea to raise awareness.

Thank you especially for bringing to our attention something else than the ‘usual pink cause’ for October. There are so many other bad things going on in the world just now, but it’s like the world in October forgets about everything else but breast cancer. Argh…

I am happy to see that this issue is getting the attention it needs. For too long it has been swept under the rug where it can too easily be ignored.

I think this is such an important cause and sadly, one people often do not talk about. Kudos to AllState for taking a stand and supporting victims.

It makes me sad to know for a fact that there are many people in my life that are dealing with DV and nobody even knows about it. It’s such a common thing, and so hard to get out of. I know I definitely have experience with it, but never again.

Once upon a time domestic violence was a hidden secret that victims were ashamed to admit happened to them. It is wonderful that there are so many programs to admit this problem exists and that help is available.
