The American Cancer Society wants to shine a spotlight on a sobering statistic: one in three women will get cancer in her lifetime! I’ve lost two family members just in the past year. My aunt to colorectal cancer, and my grandpa to pancreatic cancer… and my grandma is dying of peritoneal cancer. Cancer sucks.
BUT did you know that about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise; avoided tobacco products; and got recommended cancer screening tests? As busy moms know, it’s not always easy to incorporate these healthy behaviors into a busy lifestyle! In fact, a new national survey of approximately 2,000 women ages 25-64 revealed that they are so busy being caretakers of others, they have little time to take care of their own health. I can relate.
To encourage women to put their own health first in the fight against cancer, the American Cancer Society has just launched the Choose You movement, which empowers women with the tools, tips and motivation to put their health first and make healthy lifestyle changes. Choose You reaches women nationwide online, at work, in stores and around the community, providing them with the tools they need to make personal health a priority. By committing to their health, these women will be better able to care for their families and serve as role models for their children, families, and friends.
When asked to pick one day to focus on themselves and their health each year, the majority of women (65%) chose their birthday. I would, too. I just celebrated a birthday the day before yesterday, in fact, and am hoping I’m lucky enough to see many, many more. By empowering women with the tools and resources to take care of themselves and help prevent cancer, the Choose You movement is another way the American Cancer Society — the official sponsor of birthdays — is helping to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. I’m definitely working on eating better. Exercise has improved with the summer months beginning but stress eating is a killer.

As two time cancer survivor (cervical and colon/rectal) I would like to add a note. Both of my cancers were amenable to treatment because both were caught early because of my ongoing habit of routine screenings and self exams. Just as diet and life style are important so are screenings and only serve to demonstrate that we are our first line of defense against cancer. One other point I would like to make, I have learned a lot about cancer over the years and one that is sorely unmentioned is testicular cancer in young men. As the mother of two sons I have made it a sort of mission to rag on them and their friends about self exams. Breast self exams have become the thing to do and one would hope that testicular self exams can be made so among young men especially, who are more prone to the disease. I will be a quarter of a century old this year and have already had my yearly mammogram and pap smear (pap smears are important even is one does not have a cervex to detect vaginal cancers)and will have a colonoscopy in a couple of months (after having colon/rectal cancers colonoscopys are the main line of defense). Not a lot of fun but certainly most important.
I want to get fit.
The healthy habit I want to adopt right now is to get more sleep than I do.
I would love to be able to stop eating (and buying) potato chips and other snacks that aren’t good for me.

I most want to be able to visit the Dr. for things I should visit the Dr. for. Not having health insurance worries me alot, especially when simply walking thru the door costs $300 without any tests or prescriptions… it goes up from there! It’d be nice to be able to get physicals for everyone in my family and have some aches and pains checked out, but we don’t have the several thousand dollars it would take without insurance… nor do we have the several thousand dollars it would take to get insurance.
