14 years ago yesterday, Tejano singer Selena’s life was tragically cut short.
I remember coming home from school that Friday, looking forward to the weekend –
I was in the 9th grade – and my dad telling me the news. “Selena was shot. I heard it on the radio.” It wasn’t until I ran in the house and turned on the TV that I found out she had died. I was beyond devastated.
To this day, I still know the words to most of her songs by heart, and listen to them often.
This is probably my favorite of her songs:
But I also love her posthumous album, Dreaming of You.
She had just scratched the surface of cross-over stardom!
Whenever I’m in Corpus Christi, I try to make it a point to visit her grave site at Seaside Memorial Park. My godfather is also buried nearby.
The only thing I regret is never having seen her in concert.
There will never be another Selena!

I love Selena and still sing Dreaming of You at Karaoke all the time! Yes, the day she died was a sad day indeed. Such a waste. She could’ve been a big big star.
