The National Cathedral

I’m bummed that we missed Flower Mart this weekend. It’s an annual festival that takes place every spring on the grounds of the National Cathedral.

National Cathedral

The Cathedral is definitely a must-see when you’re in DC. It’s the 6th largest neogothic cathedral in the world, the 2nd largest in the U.S., and the 4th tallest structure in the city!

A cathedral of the Episcopal Church, the official name of the Washington National Cathedral is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It looks like it’s been around forever, but in actuality was only completed in 1990 – after 83 years of construction, and almost 200 years after the idea of building a “great church for national purposes” was born.

.

The vaulting is impressive, and the stained-glass windows are breathtaking!

.

The Cathedral is the last resting place of many notable people.
President Woodrow Wilson and Helen Keller, among others.

.

The grounds of the Cathedral are beautiful, with fountains, gardens and lots of open space.

she's back there

The Bishop’s Garden is not very stroller-friendly, but fun to explore! Here you can find plants found in medieval gardens, plants native to the DC area, as well as plants referenced in the Bible. There are fountains and a koi pond, too!

Bishop's Garden

The National Cathedral is open year-round, but hours vary, especially around holidays.
Parking is available in an underground garage, and is free on Sundays.

Visit www.cathedral.org to learn more and to take a virtual tour!

For some reason I have only been on the outside of the cathedral. I have no idea why I have never gone inside. Your inside photos are absolutely beautiful, I’ll have to go inside next time to see it.
