"Do good" - words to live by

I think it’s so important to use our social influence responsibly! Social media has an enormous potential to do good. It allows us to be connected with our family and friends, friends of friends, and beyond. It’s all about how you use it – find a cause that you’re passionate about, and take action! The mobile factor allows people to be socially responsible anytime, and practically anywhere.

We’ve all seen people get jobs, locate family members during crises, raise funds for their causes, spread news, and share their expertise on Facebook, Twitter, and their blogs. Personally, I try to raise awareness about the topics that I have a connection to. Cancer, for instance. I’ve lost three family members from this terrible disease in the past two years, and a close friend was just diagnosed this month. I try my best to raise funds, deliver information, and shed light on brands that do the same. I have friends in Japan – who weren’t affected by the earthquake, thank goodness, but knew many people that were! – so spreading news and sharing ways to help victims of the aftermath is another important cause for me. On a smaller scale, I like to enter online contests and donate the prizes. This may seem trivial, but it’s something that I can do during my free time that makes a huge difference to others. For instance, I won a Halloween photo contest a couple of years back that allowed me to provide a church daycare with a bunch of new baby gear that they distributed to needy moms in their congregation. That was a nice feeling. I know I can do much more, though, and I’m working on it.

Always keep an eye out to see how you can get involved. Opportunities to do good online are sometimes as simple as a “like” on Facebook, a retweet on Twitter, or forwarding an email to your friends and family! Many of these causes can carry on into your offline life as well.

What causes are you passionate about?
