Every day is a BIG day. That’s why you have to start it with a great breakfast! My kids are tired of hearing this from me, but it’s true!
Other than “I don’t wanna get up!”, what I get most in the mornings is “I’m not hungry.” I know from experience that eating breakfast will help my kids concentrate better in the classroom, so I don’t take no for an answer. Maya doesn’t have lunch until almost 1pm, so if she skipped breakfast, her grumbly tummy wouldn’t let her focus on her work!
I’ve used this metaphor with her – pretend you are a car. If a car runs out of gas, it’ll break down and won’t be able to go anywhere. A car can’t run on empty, and neither can your growing body! It seems to have worked. Maya will often wake up before me, make herself a bowl of cereal and read a book, waiting for everyone else to get up. It’s lovely. Maura, on the other hand, is not a morning person. She begrudgingly eats breakfast. If she gets hungry, she gets HANGRY so I could never let her go to school without eating at least a little something. I wouldn’t do that to her poor teacher!
With only a few weeks left until school starts, we’ve started making some small changes in our routine, in attempt to go back to our normal schedule. Setting out clothes the night before, going to bed early, waking up early, getting dressed (as much as I love being in PJs all day!), and eating breakfast together.
As for what we eat, that varies. One morning I may get fancy and make omelettes out of the previous night’s leftovers, the next might just be oatmeal, fruit salad, and a glass of milk, and the day after that, a big bowl of Kellogg’s® Frosted Mini Wheats® and an apple. It all depends on how much time we have, really, and what the girls feel like eating. I aim for a grain, milk, and fruit in their breakfast and usually it works out that way.
I make things easier by setting out a box of cereal, along with bowls and spoons, on the kitchen counter the night before, so if the little ones get up early, they can help themselves. No need for an adult to help them reach a high shelf. I chop up fruit for their lunches and set some aside for breakfast. For those mornings that are super rushed, I have a stash of granola bars and individually-portioned baggies full of cereal so they can chug some milk and munch on cereal or a breakfast bar at the bus stop.
Every Day is a Big Day program
In the summer months everyone would eat when they felt like it. No more of that! August is all about starting a Nutrition Tradition. Establishing a Back to School routine of eating breakfast together as a family, eating together 5 days straight and incorporating something healthy every day.
