Everyone knows that breast is best for baby, but there are times when regardless of best intentions, formula is essential – mom is on medication, has multiples, can’t pump at work, etc. Then, it’s important for new moms to provide their babies with the best possible nutritional support, but still get the best value for their dollar. According to Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, moms get both by using store-brand infant formulas (pp. 217-226). Since FDA regulations mandate that all formulas manufactured in the United States meet the same exacting standards when it comes to nutrition, store-brand infant formula is as nutritious for babies as nationally advertised brands. The difference? Moms can save significantly – up to 50% – with store brands.
I wish I had known this when my daughter was born. I had trouble nursing, so ended up switching to formula after only a few weeks. My pediatrician suggested a specific brand, and I trusted her, so I only gave my daughter that. In hindsight, I realize just how much money I could have saved if I would’ve gone with a different brand, and that the pediatrician was just pushing whatever her pharmaceutical rep requested.
Why this is timely news: As of October, a new Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program initiative designed to promote breastfeeding reduces infant-formula subsidies by up to 26%. So now parents who previously had most of their formula paid for by WIC may now have to purchase formula on their own.
These moms, and all moms who need to save money in this economy, should know that they have more affordable options. Discount coupons for Walgreens, Babies “R” Us and dozens of other leading store brand formulas are available at www.storebrandformula.com. And to see just how much YOU can save by switching to store brand formula, try out this savings calculator at Parent’s Choice.
To help spread the word, PBM Products, the largest U.S. supplier of store-brand formula, is offering one of my readers a free copy of the 368-page Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, a $16.95 value, as well as discount coupons for purchase of Walgreens, Babies “R” Us, Kroger and dozens of other leading store-brand formulas.
