Eat healthy & be more active? WE CAN!

April 20, 2009 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

wecan_logoLate last month my daughters and I attended the kick off of WE CAN! – Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition – a program developed to help kids learn about healthy eating habits and staying active, thanks to a partnership between SUBWAY restaurants and the National Institutes of Health.

The National PEP rally (Play more, Eat right, Push away the screen) was a blast, with over 300 DC-area kids in attendance. Boxing champion Laila Ali, Olympic soccer player Tab Ramos, and SUBWAY’s spokesman Jared Fogle were there to get everyone pumped about the We Can! movement. The kids enjoyed a healthy SUBWAY Fresh Fit for Kids Meal lunch, followed by an afternoon filled with sports and playground games.

My friend Janine managed to sneak in interviews with Laila and Jared.
Definitely worth watching!

Since we’re the main influence on our children, as parents we have the responsibility to encourage them to “play more, eat right, push away the screen”… and this just happens to be the first day of National TV Turn-Off week, so what a better time to give you the chance to win an amazing prize pack that will have your kids up and off the couch!

Giveaway is closed. Winners are listed here.

P.E.P. Pledgefun stuff! The PEP Rally kit includes:

  • sidewalk chalk
  • bubbles

  • a P.E.P Pledge for your child to sign… and a $10 SUBWAY Gift Card!

We’ve had a great time playing with everything in our kit this past weekend! To enter to win, leave a comment on this post with a tip on how you keep your kids healthy and active.

My kids are very active boys. It’s not hard to keep them outside on their bikes, or swimming or skiing, etc. They’re not very healthy eaters though, so I encourage each of them to cook with me so that they can see what goes in to a healthy recipe versus the amount of butter that goes into cookies. It helps. Thanks for sharing~

I don’t need to do a thing to keep my kids healthy & active…they’re the ones who keep ME active! My daughter is a member of a local swim team, and swims an hour every day at practice. My son takes karate lessons twice a week. They’re both active in their scout troops, and spend the rest of their spare time outside playing with the neighborhood kids! My daughter and I would have so much fun with this kit!
I try to feed her lots of fresh fruits and veggies everyday–she’d rather have fruit than French fries, can you believe that? And, she drinks water almost all the time, with a little juice and choco milk as treats. We go to Kindermusik classes to keep us dancing and singing, we go to the park to slide and swing, and we go to Pump It Up to jump on the inflatables–yes, Mom jumps too! I recently took her to the local YMCA to play on their indoor playground and she had a blast. We keep each other busy, that’s for sure.

One thing I do….is cook most of our meals myself. Eating out will always cause you to feel yucky and everybody knows….fast food is addicting and bad for your heart. (Exception: Subway).
I also put out a tray of veggies and dip….this is a great way to get them eating their vegetables.
