You Be the Judge! Vote for your fave!

July 14, 2009 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

Pillsbury Bake-OffThe 44th Pillsbury Bake-Off® Contest entry period ended in mid-April, and now it’s time for YOU to be the judge! For the first time in the contest’s 60-year history, you can help determine the 10 recipes among the final 100 that will compete for the $1 million grand prize!

How does the You Be the Judge! voting work? Judges will select 20 recipes to be placed online at www.bakeoff.com in pairs for a period of two weeks for each pair. Consumers can vote for their favorite recipe in each pair. The recipe from each pair that wins the most votes will earn a spot in the final competition, April 11-13, 2010, in Orlando, Florida.

Voting is limited to one vote per person per each pair of recipes. Voters must be registered members of www.pillsbury.com and 18 years of age or older as of May 1, 2009, to participate.

The first pair of recipes was posted on May 14, 2009 and a new pair of recipes will be posted every two weeks (the next updates will be on July 23, August 6, August 20, September 3 and September 17, 2009). The voting period for the tenth and final pair of recipes will close at 11:59AM CDT on October 1, 2009. Visit www.bakeoff.com for the official rules.

So I encourage you to go and cast your vote! To help you decide which recipe deserves a shot at the million-dollar top prize, watch this short video of Jann Atkins, Bake-Off® Kitchens assistant manager, as she shares some tips for evaluating a recipe:

As a thank you for taking the time to check out the website, MyBlogSpark has a fun prize pack for two of my readers. It contains a magazine of past Bake-Off® recipes and an adorable Pillsbury Doughboy giggle doll. Something for you and for your kids! 🙂

My girls adore the Pillsbury Doughboy! He’s just so huggable. Here’s a short video so you can hear him giggle:

To enter, please leave me a comment telling me what you think makes a winning recipe.

I’d love to win this! I have wanted to enter the bake-off but never have….I think a winning recipe is one that is very easy to prepare, with clear instructions, and of course has to taste great!

Presentation is key too as we eat with our eyes first:) lol

When you look at a receipe and the ingredients are things you like and you know your family will love then you want to try it. If it has cauliflower and you family absolutely will not eat it, then don’t even try it. I have found that trying to force something on my family even if I like it doesn’t work. They will try new things but I have to make sure there are no onions (if they are ground up or I use onion salt) and they don’t know it, them I can get buy with it. I can’t pull off the califlower athough I may love it. Things like that I cook for myself when no one is around or eat things I like like liver and gravy when I go to Shoneys or Por Folks. My family loves my cooking but it is because I cook things they love.

A winning recipie, to me, has an unexpected ingredient in it. An example is chocolate in chili. I hear this is good tasting, but I’ve never tried it. Another example is instant coffee crystals in beef gravy. Now this one I have tried, and it does make gravy taste more robust.

A winning recipe, in my opinion, has to appeal to the senses. Touch, taste, see, hear, feel, so that when I read it, I can “see” what it will taste like.

A winning recipe should be quick and easy to fix but still delicious.

A winning recipe is any recipe that your family asks you to make over and over. No matter how hard or simple the recipe is, if it is loved by everyone, it is definitely a winner!

Above all else, a winning recipe should be relatively simple to prepare without any exotic ingredients. After all, a winning recipe is one that the home cook will want to prepare and not many people have the patience and/or time to prepare an extremely complicated recipe no matter how good the finished product might taste.

I think a winning recipe must be one that has a fairly short list of ingredients, is easy to put together, has enough quantity to stretch to at least two meals, is very tasty, and that the family members really find delicious. One that comes to mind is tamale pie.
