Capturing Pretty

Pretty. What does that mean to you?

If you ask Maura, my 3-year-old, she’d tell you that she’s pretty when she’s wearing a dress. She’s all about dresses these days. Fortunately, she has all of her sister’s, cousin’s, and a few neighbor’s hand-me-downs, so she can literally go a month without wearing the same dress twice. Lucky girl!

A couple of days ago, I saw that a storm was coming in and thought I’d get some shots of Maura outside, near the big rosebush in our front yard. I have to admit that this huge bush is a bit of an eyesore the rest of the year, but it’s so worth it for the few, precious weeks that it’s covered in hundreds of roses. The blossoms are beautiful, but oh-so-delicate. A fierce storm can bring them all down in mere minutes.

“CROCS AREN’T PRETTY!” Maura yelled, as she stomped out the front door.

Ah, yes. I’m sure many would agree. I couldn’t find her dressy sandals, as she never leaves them where she’s supposed to, and the only other alternatives were sneakers or rain boots. I insisted on the Crocs and she was not happy.

Maura made this abundantly clear in the first few shots, and then decided that she’d had enough and ran behind the bush, even after I promised that the Crocs wouldn’t show up in the photos.

I wanted a smile, and I was going to get one.

“I’m going to take a few more pictures so we can go inside & have iPad time,” I said.

The magic word!

“Really?” Maura asked, as she came out from behind the rosebush, smiling.

“Yes!” I said. “Now just give me a little smile so we can go in before it starts raining!”

That’s all it took.

Yes, roses are pretty… and so is Maura, grumpy or not!

Thank you! I used some filters on them to set the mood. A little darker for the grumpy ones, and bright for the happy shots! πŸ™‚
