Movie of the Week: The Help

August 1, 2011 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

One of the most anticipated movies of the summer – DreamWorks Pictures’ THE HELP – is hitting theaters on Wednesday, August 10th!

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, THE HELP is a provocative and inspiring look at what happens when a southern town’s unspoken code of rules and behavior is shattered by three courageous women who strike up an unlikely friendship. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, THE HELP is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

I saw the film last week, and while I’m not allowed to officially review it just yet, I can tell you that I immediately ran to buy the book right after watching it! And I didn’t just download it to my iPad or Kindle (though I was tempted… instant gratification!), but I bought the book itself, because I have a feeling it will become a classic that I’d love for my daughters to read one day.

WATCH IT!

THE HELP opens in theaters everywhere on Wednesday, August 10th. For more on the film, please visit:

I’ll have to hold off on the movie ’cause I haven’t read the book yet. But with the fine actresses involved I’m sure the movie will be great.

I saw the trailer for this when we went to the movies the other day. My husband said, “That actually looks pretty good.” In other words, “Wow! A movie that looks like a chick flick that won’t suck!” so I’d like to go see it with him.

I read the book, The Help, about 2 years ago before I knew it was being made into a movie. The book was “fantabulous”!!!! I live in Pearl, MS which is right outside of Jackson, MS, so it was great to read and try to visualize the scenes actually happening in Jackson.

My husband had someone that came out to the house each day to take care of everyone, doing the cook, cleaning, as well as raising the kids. I still remember her even after we had married and still to this day after her death. She was not just the help she was apart of the family. Once when I got sick my husband took me to the family home because he knew she could make me well again, and she did just that. I would love to win this…
