Rubbermaid’s new modular canisters

May 18, 2010 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

My kitchen’s a mess. You wouldn’t think this by looking at it, but just open a cabinet and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Pantry space doesn’t seem to be an issue, as much as not using the space properly. It’s all very disorganized. Things get put away by one person (usually me) and often pulled out by someone else, just to be put away in another spot.

Rubbermaid sent me an 8 piece set of their new Modular Canisters to help me out with this little problem. Great for organizing pantry goods like flour, sugar, cereal, and pasta, these canisters were designed to maximize the space you have in your pantry. They stack evenly to save space, plus, they have durable bases, a securely sealing lid, and graduation marks for measuring.

The set comes with the following sized containers:

5 cup
container and lid
Great for storing baking powder and soda, coffee, crackers, etc.
10 cup
container and lid
Great for storing rice, dried fruit, granola, etc.
16 cup
container and lid
Great for storing sugar, cookies, etc.
21 cup
container and lid
Great for storing flour, cereal, dried pasta, etc.

Like most Rubbermaid sets, one lid fits all containers. Love this feature! The slim, rectangular design makes them easy to stack, or place side by side. This makes for terrific use of space! My shelves are a little short, so the 21-cup one, full of nuts, had to go on its side. The 16-cup container fit 2 bags of pasta. I like that these canisters are clear so you can easily see what is stored inside. Sugar and flour look alike, so I need to label the containers, but as I’m the only one that cooks, it didn’t seem that urgent. I’d rather take the time to make nice little labels. 😉

Product review: Rubbermaid Modular Canisters

Tips on How to Organize Your Pantry

1. Set aside about an hour of time and clear off some counter space. You’re going to need it.
2. Start pulling out food items. Place them in one of four piles:

  • Expired items… throw these away!
  • Donate items… you know your family is never going to eat that cranberry sauce before it expires. Give it to someone who could use it!
  • Baking goods or other dry goods you want to put in the Modular Canisters.
  • Other keep items.

3. With the last two piles, decide what will go in the Modular Canisters and set aside. With the remaining items, sort into like categories. For example, soup together, snacks together, crackers together, etc.
4. Put things back in the pantry. Think about how you use this space. Are your kids always grabbing snacks? Put these on lower shelves where they can reach. Do you eat cereal every morning? Keep this front and center where you can easily grab it.
5. Now, put items into the Modular Canisters. Do NOT forget to label what you put in each container. Use a Sharpie, label maker, or cut out a piece of the package and place it in the container where you can easily see it. This lets you know what’s inside and let’s others know what is where and where to put things.

BUY IT!

Modular Canisters are currently available at Fred Meyer, Publix, Ahold and Albertsons. They should be available at Wal-Mart and Meijer in August. Find more information on the Rubbermaid website.
