Dishwasher detergent bubble solution

May 22, 2009 by Mariana

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve been a bad, bad blogger. Instead of posting fun reviews and giveaways for my readers, I’ve been spending my days enjoying the sunshine outside with my girls, and spending my evenings watching lots and lots of TV. But all my favorite shows are over for the season, as is my nanny gig, so I’ll have lots more time on my hands.

But back to playing outside. One of my favorite things to do with the girls is blow bubbles! Last summer I bought this huge – bigger than my head – wand that makes the most amazing bubbles. As fun as it is to play with, it also uses up quite a bit of solution with every use, and buying those gallon jugs gets expensive!

I’d heard about making bubble solution with dishwasher detergent, but never tried it until I saw a recipe posted on Twitter using Green Works, which I just happened to review a few months ago and LOVE.

The basic recipe:
4 tablespoons of Green Works Natural Dishwashing Liquid
3¾ cups of water, preferably distilled
1 tablespoon of glycerin or white Karo Syrup

The recipe above makes about 4 cups of bubble solution. I had Karo Syrup in my pantry, so I didn’t try it with the glycerin. You can usually find glycerin at your grocery store, but I’ve heard it’s pretty expensive. As for the water, the less you use, the bigger the bubbles will be. I used tap water, and it worked just fine, but if you know for a fact that you have hard water, you might want to invest in a gallon of distilled water instead. You should experiment to see what works best for you.

Considering just how far a bottle of Green Works and Karo Syrup will go with this recipe, I don’t think I’ll have to buy bubble solution for the rest of the summer! Also, since Green Works products are 99% natural – made with plant-based and biodegradable ingredients –  you’ll feel good knowing that there’s no need to worry if your child tries to eat one of the bubbles or licks his or her soapy fingers. Or is my toddler the only one that does that? 😉

WIN IT!

Giveaway is closed. Winners are listed here.

But the recipe is not all they’re sharing! Five lucky readers will win a bottle of Green Works Natural Dishwashing Liquid. To enter, just leave a comment on this post. Something with substance, please… not just “Pick me!”

I love blowing bubbles! Thanks for the recipe… I know I have seen it before but never tried it. This time I will…BEFORE my children are too “old” (in their opinion) for bubbles. (But we all know that no one is ever really too old for bubbles!). I’ve seen GreenWorks but never tried it. Looking forward to now!

Thanks so much for the giveaway and the bubble recipe. I will be passing it on to my friends. I am heading an event for my friends son who passed away from a Congential Heart Defect so I thought it would be cool to all get together in spirit and at a certain time all blow bubbles in memory of him on the one year ann. of his death to fill the sky with bubbles for Tommy.
