I’ve been a bad, bad blogger. Instead of posting fun reviews and giveaways for my readers, I’ve been spending my days enjoying the sunshine outside with my girls, and spending my evenings watching lots and lots of TV. But all my favorite shows are over for the season, as is my nanny gig, so I’ll have lots more time on my hands.
But back to playing outside. One of my favorite things to do with the girls is blow bubbles! Last summer I bought this huge – bigger than my head – wand that makes the most amazing bubbles. As fun as it is to play with, it also uses up quite a bit of solution with every use, and buying those gallon jugs gets expensive!
I’d heard about making bubble solution with dishwasher detergent, but never tried it until I saw a recipe posted on Twitter using Green Works, which I just happened to review a few months ago and LOVE.
The basic recipe:
4 tablespoons of Green Works Natural Dishwashing Liquid
3¾ cups of water, preferably distilled
1 tablespoon of glycerin or white Karo Syrup
The recipe above makes about 4 cups of bubble solution. I had Karo Syrup in my pantry, so I didn’t try it with the glycerin. You can usually find glycerin at your grocery store, but I’ve heard it’s pretty expensive. As for the water, the less you use, the bigger the bubbles will be. I used tap water, and it worked just fine, but if you know for a fact that you have hard water, you might want to invest in a gallon of distilled water instead. You should experiment to see what works best for you.
Considering just how far a bottle of Green Works and Karo Syrup will go with this recipe, I don’t think I’ll have to buy bubble solution for the rest of the summer! Also, since Green Works products are 99% natural – made with plant-based and biodegradable ingredients – you’ll feel good knowing that there’s no need to worry if your child tries to eat one of the bubbles or licks his or her soapy fingers. Or is my toddler the only one that does that? 😉

Thanks for posting the bubble recipe! I think I will try that out with the Karo Syrup for my kindergarten class on the last day of school.
I currently use GreenWorks products for cleaning my bathroom, but I would like to transition to using them in the kitchen too.

we’ve already been experimenting this summer with making our own bubble solution without the glycerin (it is expensive)- but with very little success- I was thrilled you did a column on this and gave a recipe! I babysit 3 children, ages 4,5 and 7 years old and have a granddaughter who is just over a year old- we will be using this bubble solution a LOT this summer!
Thank you — I’m running out of my Method dishwashing liquid. I wonder if this stuff is as good!
I’d like to win a bottle of Green Works Natural Dishwashing Liquid. I’ve seen it in the supermarket but haven’t tried it yet. I am trying to use more eco friendly products and this is one I can add. Thanks.
Thanks for the giveaway…I just downloaded the PDF of the Green Works Bubble Recipe and am holding it in reserve for the annual Fourth of July family gathering; I know all the kids will get a kick out of my planned giant bubble contest !!!
Thank-you for the bubble recipe because I always buy the bottles of bubbles but they never produce any
bubbles and my grandchildren get so frustrated. I love Green Works products and the have a great smell to them too.

I use the Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner and it is great stuff (no overly heavy, cloying scent which is important to me), and it is really effective. I would like a chance to try the dish liquid too. I have three kids under four who would love to try the bubble recipe too!
At first I was afraid to try Green works products but I finally bought some last year and now I’m hooked.

One of my son’s favorite outdoor activities is blowing bubbles, chasing and then popping them! Thanks for the easy “recipe” to make bubble juice so I don’t have to keep running to the store for more!
Green Works is so refreshing. I love the way my house smells after I’ve cleaned with it, and a little goes a long way.
would love 2 try this! and your blog is great by the way! thanks! even if i dont win i still plan on getting this!
Blowing bubbles is a never ending source of fun for small children and those who maybe are only young at heart. Even my teenage grandchildren still enjoy it, although it is apt to disintegrate into a water fight!
I’ve made bubbles before but never this recipe! I will have to try it! Thanks!

I love blowing bubbles! Thanks for the recipe… I know I have seen it before but never tried it. This time I will…BEFORE my children are too “old” (in their opinion) for bubbles. (But we all know that no one is ever really too old for bubbles!). I’ve seen GreenWorks but never tried it. Looking forward to now!

We love taking bubble kits to parades, but have been reluctant to do so since we became aware of the harshness of the chemicals used in some dishwashing liquids. Now it’s safe to blow bubbles again! Thanks for the recipe!

Thanks for the opportunity 2 win
We LOVE bubbles! And i also am a firm believer in using natural and eco friendly products so this seems like a great match!

Thanks so much for the giveaway and the bubble recipe. I will be passing it on to my friends. I am heading an event for my friends son who passed away from a Congential Heart Defect so I thought it would be cool to all get together in spirit and at a certain time all blow bubbles in memory of him on the one year ann. of his death to fill the sky with bubbles for Tommy.

One thing I find frustrating about blogging is people don’t leave comments anymore. I actually take time to post info, freebies, etc. I really look forward to comments. I should do a giveaway like this and request a comment with “substance.” Any way, pick me!
I have not played with bubbles in such a long time, and seeing that recipe certainly brought back memories. I remember when we used to “try” and make bubble solution growing up… never quite worked out, but we still had fun! Might have to mix some up now.
I would love to try a different dish liquid I have always been a dawn kinda gal. Also my daughter would love some bubbles to play with.
I think playing with bubbles is ageless. I still love it! I put it in every easter basket, stocking, etc.

Time spent playing with your children is just as valuable, if not more so, than cleaning. That was my mother’s attitude and I completely agree.
